It is very typical to be able to cut pump seal aintenance costs in half. In chemical and industrial manufacturing plants numerous pumps are typically used for metering and transfering liquids and slurries throughout the process. Pump seals eventually wear or fail and need to be repaired or replaced. The goal is to replace the seals on regular convenient intervals, so if we can get the seal to perform for 12months minimum before replacing then the process can run troublefree between shutdowns.
Most customers go back to their original pump supplier to source the replacement mechanical seal. This is convenient and often times the path of least resistance. What we try to do is consider the actual mechanical seal application, and try to figure out if there is a better seal option, and often times a more economical or easier to maintain seal that can be used. Repairing a failed or worn mechanical seal can also be done for often times 50% of the cost of new. Sometimes relapping faces and new orings can get the seal to new condition, and if we can do this on many pumps in a plant can save thousands of dollars.
We specialize in rotating equipment mechanical seals, and seal repair and retrofit for process equipment like pumps, mixers, agitators, reactors, blenders, homogenizers, dispersers, inline shear pumps and shear mixers, and stirred tanks.

1. our first goal is to save you money and improving pump uptime
2. we give you options, for either repair, refurbish, retrofit, or for a new seal. We work with you to optimize seal design for economy and long life
3. we do not push you to buy complete new seals, we are happy to supply seal kits
4. pump troubleshooting to find the root cause of seal issues is available to you
5. fast response, fast repair service, and the best pump seal prices available
Some pump seal types:
Single Pump Lip Seal
This is a simple elastomer lip seal, or oil seal which provides a simple leak barrier. Typically supplied in Viton, Buna, and PTFE lip seals are generally good for low pressures (less than 20psi).
Pump Packing
Pumps with stuffing boxes have packing to create the seal.
Single Mechanical Seal – Simple Spring Component Seal
The simplest seal design is a single spring component seal. These seal types typically use a dynamic elastomer boot to seal along the shaft and drive the rotary portion of the seal. The stationary face is mounted in an elastomer “boot” or cup and sealed with an oring on the OD. Metal parts are 304SS, or 316 stainless steel and other exotic alloys such as Hastellooy available as a special order. A range of face materials are available depending on your sealing application. There is a very wide variety of seal elastomers available, but more limited on a single style seal like this, as non gripping elastomers such as PTFE or FFKM cannot be used due to the need for the elastomer to drive the rotary section of the seal. Documentation is available to suit, and USP VI and FDA certs are available to suit.
All mechanical seals have three basic sets of parts:
1) Set of primary seal faces: one rotates and one remains stationary.
2) A set of secondary seal or shaft packing, such as orings, rubber boots, PTFE wedges, and V Rings.
3) Hardware including gland rings, compression rings, springs, retaining rings and bellows. On top entry mixers often times debris wells are used for more sanitary applications.

Single Cartridge Style Pump Seal
Cartridge seals are the preferred design for ease of installation and maintenance. Moving up from the basic single spring component seal brings a number of options. We can provide a cartridge seal (all seal components are pre-set and installed on a sleeve that slides onto the pump shaft) or a more specialized component seal. The design flexibility at this price / delivery point allows us to use virtually any seal face or o-ring material. We can also offer complete documentation packages including USP Class VI certification for o-rings and mill certificates for metal components. The Easiest seal to install as a replacement for pump packing is a cartridge type mechanical seal:
The Beauty of cartridge seals are they are self-contained. Holding all the elements of a mechanical seal set:
• Stationary Seal Face
• Rotating Seal Face
• Shaft sleeve
• Gland
• Elastomers
Cartridge mechanical seals are the easiest seal to maintain and for a mechanic to install. You simply slide the seal onto the pump shaft and bolt to the seal housing gland, the benefit of a cartridge seal is that it cannot be installed improperly saving downtime and problems with startup.

Sanitary Pump Seal Specifics – can I get USP Class VI and FDA O-Rings and Elastomers for the Pump?
Yes, an area of expertise for WMProcess is sanitary and aseptic mechanical seals. We offer new seals with FDA and USP VI classification and also can retrofit and refurbish your existing seals to accommodate.
USP Class VI: This the USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia) test standards. It involves preparing extracts of the test material in saline, alcohol, polyethylene glycol, and vegetable oil which are implanted and compared to a control. USP Class VI is common in the biotech and medical device industry and certification is often required for o-rings and elastomers in seals and pumps.
Double Mechanical Seal with Liquid Barrier
A double seal uses two single mechanical seals back to back or in tandem with a pressurized seal housing. The double seals are independently lubricated with a barrier fluid. This barrier helps prevent the process pumped stream getting to the atmosphere.
Double Mechanical Seal with Gas Barrier
A double gas seal uses two back to back single mechanical seals with a pressurized seal housing using air or nitrogen as a barrier fluid. The double seals are independently lubricated with the gas barrier fluid, and is a more sophisticated design to keep process fluids from entering the atmosphere.
