What is the difference between a mixer and homogenizer Typically a mixer is a general purpose blending device, or stirrer. A homogenizers is a high speed and high shear device for more intense mixing, emulsifying, and dissolving type application

Is there a way to test a mixer to see what is required for my application
Yes!
www.wmprocess.com does offer free lab testing of your product (providing it is safe/non hazardous) in our or our partners test lab to determine what is the best mixer for the job

Is there a difference between a sanitary and industrial mixer
Yes, typically an industrial mixer will be simpler and more economical. A sanitary mixer will have special paint or all stainless construction including motor and gearbox, special polishing on the shaft and impeller, and often times electropolishing and cGMP documentation packages.

Why would I choose electric or air operated stirrer
It depends on what is available in your lab or plant. Air mixers are often used in intrinsically safe mixing environments or XP (explosion proof) mix rooms.

What if I need an explosion proof mixer
It depends on what is available in your lab or plant. Air mixers are often used in intrinsically safe mixing environments or XP (explosion proof) mix rooms. We also offer electric mixers with XP motors suitable for your explosion proof mix room classification. We can also do instinsically safe mixer tachometers and variable speed drives to suit.

How do I choose an appropriate lab mixer or stirrer for my needs
There are a lot of variables to consider, White Mountain Process has some technical articles that may help and offers free lab testing.

Do you offer Biopharm or aseptic mixing designs
Yes many different designs are available, including single use mixers, autoclaveable mixers for closed tanks, and simple clamp on all stainless sanitary mixers

What documentation on the mixer is available
For a biopharm mixer the documentation package varies, but we typically can supply:

  • Mixer component material test reports (MTRs)
  • Mixer polishing certs
  • Agitator electropolish and passivation certs
  • Details installation and operation manual for the agitator
  • Mixer preventative maintenance
  • Mixer run test data
  • Any other cGMP mixer documents required

Do I need mixing baffles
Possibly your tank needs baffles to optimize mixing. We would want to evaluate the tank geometry, mixer location, and the mixing application to determine if baffles would be helpful. We have technical articles on mixing baffles available.
